The Spline board,a succesfull crossbred of a skateboard and a J-Board.

What do you get when you cross a J-board with a skateboard…….. A spline board! A spline or better said, a flat spline, is a device to draw curves, it’s modern term is “flexible curve” and from the name you might get an idea of what the spline board excels at….cornering and curving.

The original J-board(caster board) is quite a nifty device, through balancing and moving your lower body you create speed, even up hill.  My sons who are pretty good skateboarders got theirs a few years back and initially they left their skateboards behind , enjoying the relative ease of moving around on a J-board…but that enthusiasm has settled a bit in the last few years and they returned doing ollies and riding the ramps on their  Powell boards. Sure they could do an ollie on their J boards, but it was all less natural, the hard plastic just didn’t flex or flexed too much in the wrong places. Nothing beats a wooden board when riding the ramps and performing tricks. The hard plastic cheap ass  tires didn’t help to improve that experience.

The J board EX

DUB STACK a Japanese maker of skateboards cross bred one of their skateboards with a J board and unlike cross bred dogs which only get improved looks, but lose their natural born qualities, this baby turned out to be a revelation! A healthy baby was born and listened to the name Spline Skateboard™ DSB-13

They used a serious deck made out of 7ply Canadian Maple, cut it in half and connected those parts with a UHMW (ultra high molecular weight polyethylene) /glass fiber flexible center part.

The center console makes for easy carrying

Than they used 76mm wheels with a 85A hardness for smooth running in and out- doors.

For the trucks they used Aluminum A356 with a PU cushion. These wheels have 360 degree rotation, and this in combination with the PU shock absorption makes you able to do tricks not possible on a J or skate board.

The bearings used are ABEC-7(same like those on the stereo vinyl cruiser), these are smooth and strong and can withstand abuse on the rough city streets or on the ramps.

The dimensions

Now check out this video to see this board in action.

The only downfall I noticed, is that the advised maximum weight of the rider is  65 kg, but I’ve been riding it with my 75 kg(too much ramen) and didn’t experience any problems with shocks or smoothness of the ride…

So my boys are happy campers and they steal the show at the skating ramps…making me a proud dad!

The price is around 11,000 yen which makes it cheaper than a fully loaded skate board and just a tad more expensive than a J board.
