The best looking Skateboard decks….ever

If you’ve been reading our blog, then you know that we posses a great affection for skateboarding, three members of our staff can be regularly found riding their boards when they’re off from work on the streets of Nagoya or on one of the many indoor skate parks.(yes, Nagoya, voted one of the most boring cities in Japan is really kind to its four wheeled residents, including an outdoor park right in the center of the city!).

A wave of excitement swept through our office when we received a press release announcing the production of four decks which truly capture the Japanese spirit.

Combining Japanese culture and skateboarding would mostly end up in a deck with the graphics of some famous Japanese manga, anime character, or just a Kanji Character and would  produce nothing more than a bored yawn from our skaters…but this time they truly took notice.

Have a look;

What you’re seeing, are four high quality SilverFox Canadian maple 7-ply decks with a supreme finish of Urushi lacquer!    Not just any lacquer, but Yamanaka lacquer which dates back to the Azuchi Momoyama period, which not only sounds like a very long time ago, it actually is.

They come in four versions:

I can hear you thinking(I developed that skill after years of diligent zen training at my local temple), “won’t that be too fragile?”. Nope,   the lacquer layer actually increases the durability and resilience of the board.

True though, as any skater knows, your board will get damaged and eventually end up in the dust bin or on your wall, it just takes longer with these boards and until that time you’ll have the sickest board in the park. Priced at $130,- they aren’t that more expensive than any other deck….well maybe double as expensive , but they last twice as long, it’s simple math!

We ordered all four, but I won’t let my skate colleagues have them, they go on the wall until each of them reaches their yearly quote (which is set impossibly high) a better stimulus just doesn’t exist!

If your interested check out their site, and drop us a mail if you’re interested!

Reebok teams up with Chocomoo to create future noise.

The title might have you left scratching your head, but no worries I left the capital letters of Future and Noise out on purpose to get your attention, cheeky eh? Future Noise is the theme of this collaboration and not some preserved noise to be opened in the future (well some folks would say that a wrapped CD would fulfill that description too, but that’s so imaginationless).

Chokomoon Yuka is a gifted Harajuku illustrator who has lend her pop art illustrations to several projects and products like Dr.Martens, the pop group Exile, Newneu skateboard products, Disney etc etc.

This time she teamed up with sports apparel maker Reebok to create five distinctive pieces.

When you say Reebok, you say Instapump, the super light and oh so comfy kicks. The model used by Chocomoo is the Fury CM.

Japanwebshopping.com gets a Spring make-over.

It’s May, the flowers bloom, the birds lay eggs, the smell of fresh green grass tickles your prefrontal cortex….memories from  happy times are triggered and a feeling of nostalgia flows through your body. Life is good.  But May isn’t just a month of memories, it’s also a month of renewal, new wallpapers are chosen, Ikea is busier than ever and websites get a sunny make-over. Japanwebshopping has been sporting a very dark look, yeah we are freaks and we’re proud of it! Problem is that it was maybe a bit too otaku and scared away the casual shopper. We went to work and created a lighter and easier accessible site, while still holding on to our beloved black and gray (that we are great Yohji Yamamoto fans is something that goes without saying).

Let us know what you think about it, your opinion greatly matters to us.

JWS japanwebshopping website renewal.

Let me first thank you all dear customers/friends who have been putting your trust in our service, without your help we’d all be working for other companies and we wouldn’t enjoy our jobs/lives as much as we do now.

We’ve been  getting the most surprising and unusual requests and thereby expanding our horizon in what you want and we learn what makes our fellow human being tick. Communicating with folks from all around the world has been a challenging at times (we had to bring in a part-time Spanish speaker/translator  and on a rare occasion a Russian translator), but besides  these rare hiccups, chatting with you through Skype/WordPress/mail and Facebook has been a blast.

We also value your input a lot, and a common complain was that our website loaded like snail…our mistake was that we tried to put as much information and connecting links in it as possible, thereby creating a headache for those without high speed internet access.

So we went a bit simpler this time, and changed the look to a more material/metal look. The pages load a bit faster and it’s definitely easier to the eye. Our love for manga and anime are also more present this time around.

This dark metallic look continues in the separate product pages.

We still haven’t completed the whole site yet though(especially the Japanese section), but we’re working hard to have it finished before Christmas.

Thank you all so much for your patience and in the meantime we will continue to be the best/safest/cheapest (and most personal) personal shopper for you.

Kapelmuur, Belgian inspired Bicycle wear from Japan.

When you read the words Kapelmuur, you probably imagine it to  be a Dutch or some Dutch related language like Flemish or Afrikan word, but definitely not Japanese! Well you’re right, it’s not Japanese, it’s Flemish. However the brand name Kapelmuur is a registered trademark of a Japanese company located in Tokyo selling bicycle wear for amateurs and pros.

To clear up the confusion we’ll have to teach you a bit of cycle history, for years from 1973 till 2011 to be precise, the muur (wall) van Geraardsbergen also known as the Kapelmuur used to be the often decisive part in the finale of the “Ronde van Vlaanderen”. It’s a hill with a length of 1075 meters and a ascent percentage of 20%, but what made this hill so challenging was the fact that it is laid out with “kinderkopjes” stones which are traditional Dutch/Flemish natural stones which where placed horizontally and thereby creating a stairs-like ascent.

This Historic(al) part of road racing history was used as inspiration by a Japanese company to create a line of fashion for the casual and serious cyclist and folks who just love to walk around looking like a cyclist(I’m sure there are a few) Their trade mark is the Vlaamse Leeuw or Flemish Lion, which appears on almost all of their products which ranges from jackets to socks.

Their products are only for sale in Japan, but now you can get your hands on them without having to come Japan, they sell their products here and here and here . Or you go to their online shop  to find their latest products…may we recommend to open two or three  windows in your browser so you can compare  prices, they sometimes differ a little,

Why use a personal shopping site like JWS?

Imagine that you are looking for those limited edition sneakers, a pair of Kuchinashi jeans, a specific accessory for your camera, original Japanese snacks or Japanese books….
You found what you’ve been looking for online, but now the real problems start, language problems, overpriced international shipping or lack of international shipping, Japanese clothes sizes and credit card issues prevent many from ordering on-line. Or what about the plenty of auction sites  in Japan, browsing through them is sheer fun, but ordering from them is like  pulling nails.
Wouldn’t you like to know the details, like size and quality, or the sellers reputation before ordering something?
