Japanese boys’ school uniform inspires steamy new swimsuit for women

Move over, sailor suit swimwear.  Now it’s the gakuran’s turn in the spotlight and water.

Schools uniforms are one of Japan’s favorite design motifs, and we’ve seen them serve as the inspiration for swimwear several times. However, it’s usually the female school uniform, the sailor suit, that those swimsuits are based on.

Japanese fashion label School Fiction has decided to go a different route by creating a swimsuit for women that takes its visual cues from the gakuran, the coat traditionally worn by male high school students.

Authentic gakuran are a button-up garment, and School Fiction’s gakuran swimsuit keeps that aesthetic with a row of gold-colored buttons along the front. However, most of those are just for show, as the zipper on the swimsuit’s back is what you need to use to put it on.

The two clasps of the straight collar can be undone, though, to show what an iconoclast rebel you are. The top button is also functional, while the rest are just for show.

▼ The second gakuran button used to be a common token of love that a guy would give his crush upon graduation, so the fact that it’s not really doing anything means you can give it to your sweetheart with no qualms.

▼ The swimsuit is made out of an 80/20 polyester/polyurethane blend material.

Putting new swimwear on the market in mid-September may seem like strange timing, but since School Fiction bills itself as a “nerd and fetish brand,” odds are the gakuran swimsuit is more intended for use at anime conventions, cosplay photo shoots, and in the privacy of consenting adults’ homes more so than in the water. While orders take roughly a month to ship, fan art is instantaneous.

▼ School Fiction itself recommends customers accessorize with a cape and old-school student’s cap.

The gakuran swimsuit can be ordered directly from School Fiction here, or alternatively from Amazon here, and is priced at 14,500 yen (US$130) on both sites.

Chinese Dress School Swimming Costumes

Fetish designer and owner of Moira Design combines the traditional Japanese school swimsuit with a traditional Chinese dress.                                                                                 The “China Sukumizu“,  comes in a choice of two colours: red or blue, and both designs feature cut-out sections, a high-neck collar, and a highly decorative button closure. While the red style has slimming strips of black nylon on either side, the blue version adds a little spice with a set of pale blue lace inserts.

Wooden samurai bokuto sword umbrella

This  umbrella  takes its cues from a bokuto, or wooden sword.                                     There’s some cool kanji character etching on the handle. Well, at least it looks cool. The actual meaning is pretty pedestrian, since the kanji just reads “Toyako,” or “Lake Toya,” a common tourist destination in Hokkaido.

bu-9.png

If this is all starting to sound familiar, odds are you’re a fan of anime and manga franchise Gintama, in which leading man/badass swordsman Gintoki wields a bokuto with the same kanji characters carved into it. The similarities are clearly intentional, as Thanko’s official name for the product is Bokuto Umbrella Toyako, and one of its promotional images is a thinly veiled bit of Gintama cosplay.

Censor your underwear with new Mini Petticoat

First there was the black Frilled Mini Petticoat, designed to be worn under short miniskirts, and brought out the same thigh-high A-line silhouette seen on anime heroines while also blending into the dark shadows beneath the garment, making the area underneath the skirt look neat and well-concealed.

Now, cosplayers and short-skirt wearers who prefer a more eye-catching look will be pleased to know that a new colour has been added to the range. The new white Ruffled Mini Petticoat features the same design as its black predecessor, with elasticised trims around the thighs which, according to the makers, makes it impossible for anyone to see your underwear.

The new white Ruffled Mini Petticoat went on sale for 7,020 yen (US$63) at Village Vanguard stores in Japan earlier  this month, but it’s been so popular that it’s already sold out online. They’re currently waiting for more stock to arrive, but given the immense popularity of these unique petticoats, they’re likely to sell fast once they’re on sale again, so if you’re interested be sure to register your email address to receive a notification as soon as they become available.

Japanese “boyfriend’s dress shirt dresses” are boyish and girlish all at once

Clever alterations make this a better choice than anything hanging in your boyfriend’s closet.

Japanese and Western fashion preferences don’t always perfectly align with one another. However, there is some overlap in tastes, and you’ll find plenty of people in both regions who think there’s a special mix of playfulness and cuteness in a woman slipping on an oversized man’s shirt and wearing it like a dress.

But thanks to Japanese designer Gomi Hayakawa and fashion label Double Chaca, there’s no need to go raiding a guy’s closet to pull off the look. Hayakawa, who’s also contributed designs for small-bust lingerie brand Feast, has recently unveiled her latest creation. Called the “Hubby One-Piece,” the dress keeps several visual cues from a man’s dress shirt, but makes a few key adjustments to make it a viable garment to wear out and about.

hd-2

The dress if form-fitting in the torso and down to the small of the back, but loose in the sleeves and near the hemline, providing a slimming and relaxed look. Meanwhile, hidden snaps keep the openings along the front of the dress securely closed, so as not to let the wearer’s skin peek out between the gaps in the buttons.

hd-3

The other half of Hayakawa’s spring lineup for Double Chaca is the Little Tail One-Piece. The fishtail design may not be as unique as that of the Hubby One-Piece, but it still makes for a breezy, feminine look that’s versatile enough to be paired with various styles worn underneath the sleeveless dress.

hd-4

Both dresses are available in the two colors seen here, with the Hubby One-Piece priced at 23,000 yen (US$204) and the Little Tail at 21,000 yen. Orders can be made online through retailer Lavi Shop beginning on the evening of March 13, and for those who can’t wait that long, both dresses will also be offered for sale at the pop-up Lavi Shop at Tokyo’s Laforet Harajuku between March 7 and 16.

Interested? Drop us a mail and we’ll order one for you.

Beautiful Japanese maid uniform bikini sets are really kawaii!

Now you can go swimming in your maid’s costume this summer.

Japanese online swimwear retailer Pixy Party is making a name for itself with cute and sexy collections designed to make girls look like adorable waterside pixy fairies. This summer, they’re dedicating a whole line of bikinis to a different type of fantasy, with the “I Love Maid Lovely Bikini Set” featuring black-and-white numbers with lace, buttons and bowties in three eye-catching designs.

img_104981_2

▼ The first style features a lacy drawstring top and cute black-and-white briefs that perfectly replicate a maid’s uniform with bowtie details.

img_104981_3

▼ The second design comes with equally pretty details, including a lace neck strap and tiny black buttons.

img_104981_4

▼ The third design adds some maid-style frills to the straps, along with a thin, flowing black ribbon.

The company mentions that the outfits are designed to be worn in and out of the pool, at events like summer outdoor festivals.

While the lace details and embellishments are firmly sewn in to withstand use in water, the bikini tops are said to pair well with shorts and skirts when worn at outdoor events.

Brave maids, of course, are free to wear the bikinis whichever way they like, and can even play mix-and-match with all three sets.

The bikinis are available in small, medium and large sizes, and are currently available to purchase online for 5,184 yen (US$50.38) each, for delivery within Japan, or outside Japan if you use Japanwebshopping!

Japanwebshopping.com gets a Spring make-over.

It’s May, the flowers bloom, the birds lay eggs, the smell of fresh green grass tickles your prefrontal cortex….memories from  happy times are triggered and a feeling of nostalgia flows through your body. Life is good.  But May isn’t just a month of memories, it’s also a month of renewal, new wallpapers are chosen, Ikea is busier than ever and websites get a sunny make-over. Japanwebshopping has been sporting a very dark look, yeah we are freaks and we’re proud of it! Problem is that it was maybe a bit too otaku and scared away the casual shopper. We went to work and created a lighter and easier accessible site, while still holding on to our beloved black and gray (that we are great Yohji Yamamoto fans is something that goes without saying).

Let us know what you think about it, your opinion greatly matters to us.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica anime lingerie line expands with new Sayaka and Kyoko sets

Second batch of themed intimate apparel rounds off representation of the hit series’ core cast.

Anime TV series Puella Magi Madoka Magica ends on a bit of an ambiguously bittersweet note. The core conflict of the dark magical girl story is only partially resolved, but thanks to the efforts of its heroines, there’s at least a ray of hope for the future.

That description actually parallels what’s happening with the Madoka Magica lingerie line, Earlier this spring, anime fashion company Super Groupies unveiled bra and pantie sets inspired by character’s Madoka, Homura, and Mami, but as of April 17, they’re no longer available. Still, that doesn’t mean you’re completely out of options, and now it’s time for the final two members of the central cast, Sayaka and Kyoko, to get lingerie sets of their own.

ML 2

Aside from being in the image colors of their respective characters, the designs feature subtle nods to the series for the enjoyment of sharp-eyed fans. The Sayaka set’s bra features a dangling charm in the shape of the fortissimo musical annotation, which matches the barrette she wears throughout the anime.

ML 4

▼ The panties, meanwhile, feature an asymmetrical lace accent.

ML 5

ML 6

ML 7

The Kyoko set bra lacks a charm, but instead has a black ribbon at its center reminiscent of the one the character uses to tie her hair up into its customary ponytail.

ML 8

▼ The panties are also a bit more orthodox than unbalanced Sayaka’s.

ML 9

ML 10

ML 11

Both sets are identically priced at 8,800 yen (US$82) and can be purchased directly from Super Groupies (Sayaka here, Kyoko here) with delivery scheduled for mid-October. Oh, and if you’re ordering, don’t forget your Madoka Magica swimsuit, too.
