Kendama for beginners and pro’s

If you’ve been waiting, now is the perfect time to take up the traditional children’s game!

As the game grows in popularity overseas, kendama is also getting a bit of extra attention in Japan, it looks like the game might be developing some real mainstream appeal. And with Sanrio now releasing some ultra-cute kendama sets, we’re pretty sure it’s popularity will only grow more!

Check out these vids from the duo Zoomadanke with zoomastyle!

▼ Because who wouldn’t want to play with this in public?

Kendama has been around for generations, so there’s no questioning its staying power, but we also think it’s fair to say the game isn’t quite as popular as, say, Candy Crush these days. But a Hello Kitty version of kendama seems like the perfect way to get some new people to play the game. And the toys, produced by Sanrio and available on their online store for 2,268 yen (about US$20), even bear the Japan Kendama Association’s specially recommended product mark, so if you’re looking to get started, this is, officially, one of the best you can buy!

There are six to choose from, all featuring some of Sanrio’s most popular characters. Of course, the first, and our favorite, is Hello Kitty!

▼ Though we’d feel kind of bad swinging her around like that…

There are also two versions of everyone’s favorite lazy egg, Gudetama! First is the normal version, which has the character sitting in half an egg shell, looking as if it just settled into a nice hot bath.

And then we have a golden version of Gudetama.

▼ Though he looks no less lazy…

And for a old-school, child-friendly version, we also have one of the cutest frogs in Japan, Kero Kero Keroppi!

There’s also a Pom Pom Purin kendama toy in case your favorite animal is the adorably illustrated dog.

And, finally, there’s a My Melody version. Interestingly enough, it’s not listed on Sanrio’s website — but you can find it on Amazon Japan.

If you want to take a notch higher than it’s a good idea to check out the following kendama tokohoku

This site is set up by Beams and Yahoo Japan Corporation Reconstruction Assistance, primarily for kendama enthusiasts, and for the build up of Tohoku where the awful earthquake and tsunami struck. Part of the sales will be donated to organizations engaged in reconstruction in Tohoku. So you get the best of the best, because each product is created in collaboration with professional kendama players, and you get to do a good deed!

Hiroshi Sawada was the first Asian to winthe Latte Art World Championship in Seattle in 2008. The first Streamer Coffee Company” in Shibuya, Tokyo opened in 2010, and quickly expanded to four more shops. Somebody who had the talent to balance four succesful shops and still making perfect lattes in his mainshop surely has a knack for kendama..and yes he’s a passionate kendama player, even releasing his own kendama line.

Japanese doll sets for Hina festival accommodate the folks with tight living spaces.

In February the living space  of Japanese houses get a lot tighter, because that’s the time the parents of girls display the Hina dolls for the upcoming Hina festival or girls’day.  Hina festival is celebrated on the 3rd of March parents set up a display of ornamental dolls representing the Emperor, empress and their underlings.

Kids ya’ll sleep in the closet for next few weeks.

The custom of displaying dolls began during the Heian period or in other words a loooong time ago. Formerly, people believed the dolls possessed the power to contain bad spirits but since  traditionally,  grandparents of a newborn girl used to buy a set  hina dolls, they are nowadays taken out of the closet  just to display  and to have a reason to celebrate something, because we all love a party don’t we?

Kyaradeko Special Day specter watch Hinamatsuri
Youkai watch hina cake
Hina festival food..it’s just too beautiful to eat.

Traditions continue, but values change even so in Japan…nobody wants to abolish such  cultural customs, but  times are changing and more and more folks value practicality over tradition. So (almost)gone are the elaborate displays of these beautiful dolls, only to be replaced by smaller(cheaper) compact versions.

The display of the hina dolls is mostly done to make your little girl happy, and what better way to keep up her good spirits is by giving her some dolls in the shape of her favorite cartoon character?

In Disney crazy Japan this Mickey and Minnie premium hina doll set is surely to be a big hit

Badass Hello Kitty Skull accessories.

Cute and evil, bright and dark, punk and AKB48….Sons of Anarchy on a moped…yeah that’s what comes to mind when you first witness the Hello Kitty skull ring or the Hello Kitty skull necklace.

It’s like a baby with a gun…it’s shocking but…no, it’s just shocking. I for once love shocking, a hardcore punker with a Hello Kitty rucksack, a high school girl with fishnet stockings. Unbalanced is the spice of life, they are the things which keeps our society of drowning in the ordinary.

punk rubber duck source:etsy

Produced by JAM HOME MADE, the rings cost 31,320 yen (about US$264) and comes in 5 different sizes and is rhodium plated. For those who don’t know rhodium, it’s a s a noble metal, resistant to corrosion, found in platinum- or nickel ores together with the other members of the platinum group metals. it is also one of the rarest and most valuable precious metals and therefore worth the steep(ish) price we think.

kitty (2)

the skull ring or necklace are equipped with Kitty-chan’s distinguishing features — namely a red ribbon and a cute yellow nose..for the rest it looks pure evil.

The necklace is a bit  smaller and cheaper  at 17,280 yen (about $145) and comes with a 45 centimeter chain

Jam Home Made doesn’t accept international orders…but as a lot of our valued customers already know, we can get it for you and ship it to you hassle free and cheaply…

Wow it has been 2016 for nine days now and this my first post of the year…well to be honest that’s how long my hangover and upset stomach lasted…the fact that I bought a play station 4 didn’t really help speeding up my will to sit behind the PC and greet you my dear readers/customers..but my heart and thoughts were with you the whole time.

PlayStation 4 METAL GEAR SOLID V LIMITED PACK THE PHANTOM PAIN EDITION, expensive yeah, but you didn’t think I’d get myself an ordinary one..now did you?

For those folks who have no idea how the Japanese celebrate each year’s “baton touch” (japanglish..meaning take over the job), let me give you a short description..after all the PS4 is calling my name.

On new year’s eve, most folks sit around the TV watching boxing(it used to be K1…), silly variety shows full of Yoshimoto(the biggest comedy talent agency), with the best watched being a show called waratte ikenai (you’re not allowed to laugh), which my three sons aged 6, 8 and 11 love…which kinda explains the target audience..

Another big group watches the yearly Kohakku, a singing show in which artists are divided in two groups and have to battle and if you’re not into Japanese music you might feel better getting your toenails pulled. A lot of families eat soba or buckwheat noodles, because the length of the noodles represents longevity(you can’t make this up)

When it’s twelve o’clock don’t expect any special celebrations like fireworks, no we wish each other an Akemashite omedetou( ou is pronounced as oo for the Dutch readers), and some might brace the cold and head up to the nearest shrine (Temples are rarely visited during festivities) to perform a season’s first prayer…others go to bed and wait till the next day…expect a lot of climbing and waiting if you want to experience this.

New year’s day is when the families come together for celebrations, kind of like Christmas in other countries, they have a meal mostly consisting out of shabu shabu or sukiyaki, sushi and other delicacies.

I’m sure each family has their own traditions, but these are the basics..so for those who do expect a huge celebration during new year’s eve…well don’t.

Back to reality..the hangover has worn off, and new requests have been received, so let’s see what’s new.

Let’s start with a little video to see what Hello Kitty and Mazinger Z have in common…

Yep that’s a Kitty with attitude, this Mazinger Z inspired  robot kitty is now up for pre-order from January 6 till January 24. It’s about 105mm in height and weighs 400 grams(chubby kitty). It’s made out of die-cast and ABS with delivery scheduled for late may. The little Kitty figure is included.

After they bumped into each other they changed souls (true story) and besides there souls they also received each others’ looks….Yep this stuff happens all the time here in Japan.. So how did Mazinger Z look after this encounter…

Wow if that isn’t the cutest robot…you wonder how Optimus Prime would react if he’d encounter this robot. Now it’s yours to have for a mere 8,424 yen as pre-order. As usual Sanrio doesn’t accept foreign issued credit cards so you’re stuck with us…but that’s no punishment because we give you the points too!

JWS japanwebshopping website renewal.

Let me first thank you all dear customers/friends who have been putting your trust in our service, without your help we’d all be working for other companies and we wouldn’t enjoy our jobs/lives as much as we do now.

We’ve been  getting the most surprising and unusual requests and thereby expanding our horizon in what you want and we learn what makes our fellow human being tick. Communicating with folks from all around the world has been a challenging at times (we had to bring in a part-time Spanish speaker/translator  and on a rare occasion a Russian translator), but besides  these rare hiccups, chatting with you through Skype/WordPress/mail and Facebook has been a blast.

We also value your input a lot, and a common complain was that our website loaded like snail…our mistake was that we tried to put as much information and connecting links in it as possible, thereby creating a headache for those without high speed internet access.

So we went a bit simpler this time, and changed the look to a more material/metal look. The pages load a bit faster and it’s definitely easier to the eye. Our love for manga and anime are also more present this time around.

This dark metallic look continues in the separate product pages.

We still haven’t completed the whole site yet though(especially the Japanese section), but we’re working hard to have it finished before Christmas.

Thank you all so much for your patience and in the meantime we will continue to be the best/safest/cheapest (and most personal) personal shopper for you.

Online shopping from Japan, here are the hot sites! Part one

For a lot people the three most satisfying things in life  start with a “S”, sleeping, sex and shopping, for my wife it’s four since my name is Serge…(get disapproving look from wife and pitiful look from co-workers..). We can’t help you with the sex and sleep part, actually we are probably going to ruin that with the introduction of these awesome shopping sites. We will separate this story into four parts, because there are just too many good sites here in Japan selling just so much amazing stuff…

We are here to help, translate and advise you which we do gladly, nothing is too much work for us and is of course free you can contact us easily with this request form , write it, send it and wait for our answer, there will be no spamming, newsletter or anything,,,just our reply.

Anyways have fun and if you find some websites which could be interesting for other folks, then please let us know and we’ll put it up.

Super Groupies, the site to visit when you’re looking for anime or manga related fashion or collectibles. They give you points which you can use on your next purchase.

Runatown is a great, be it a little cluttered, website selling anime inspired gadgets and collectibles. There is an option to choose English or other languages, but these provide just a slightly amusing google translation.

Yes Christmas is coming, and so are the related products

The place to go if you want to get this limited R2-Q5 virtual keyboard…only a few remaining.

Tamashii Web | Bandai Japan Collectors Division Official Site

Tamashi Nations or the Bandai Japan Collectors Division Official Site (wait that doesn’t spell Tamashi.!.?). They sell everything made by Premium Bandai, Bandai for grown ups as we like to call it.

Their biggest seller must be the S.H.Figurearts line which mostly consists out of limited figures based on characters of Japanese and foreign anime, kamen rider series and  movies…but also pop stars like Michael Jackson

And now up for pre-order is Freddy Mercury from Queen!

Don’t forget the “body kun” series for aspiring animators!

Other shops specialized in Bandai products are:

Hobby Online Shop Hobby Online Shop which is slightly more Gundam orientated but also sells other products but more “toy like” than the offerings on Tamashi.

Megatore has a lot of female figures, slightly so sexy if I may say so. When you click on Space ship Yamato in Hobby online, you’ll get a list of pre-fabricated models like:

Mecha Collection Space Battleship Yamato 2199 No.19-dimensional dive ship UX-01

But if you click on the link in Megatore, you’ll get something like this:

Finally for all you “kawaii”lovers, there is the Sanrio shop with enough Hello Kitty ,Little twin stars, and my melody to last you for months of clicking and drooling.

And for the first person to react we will give you 500 points present! Yes we can sign up on more of our staff and she will give you her 500 points (of course we had to pressure her..hard)

So there you have it, the first of four, let us know what genre you’re interested in and we’ll find the best site according to your interest.

Protect yourself and others with these ultra cute masks.

In Asia it’s common to wear masks during winter and spring time, especially in Japan the land where everybody seems to care about their fellow country men/women. There is a truly Japanese word for this called “meiwaku suru” or in plain English; to trouble someone.  It is “meiwaku” to give someone your cold and therefore is it in good manner to wear a mask when one has caught this simple yet incurable virus. Another less spoken of reason is that women can forfeit putting on make-up and walk around with a “supin” or make-up less face, thus sparing others some heart stopping moments when they are confronted by a eyebrow-less, thin lipped, narrow eyed and pimply skinned woman person.

A case of before and after..

Of course not everybody is so shallow and surely some men prefer the natural look to the “I’m  pretty  and cute ” one……but the Japanese are very vain and care strongly what others think of them. Another reason would be bad breath..I think

There is of course a less selfless reason to wearing masks too, they are said to protect the wearer against virus (yep the plural of virus is virus), hay fever, other people’s bad breath and the feared “yellow sand”, which is fine sand blown over from China creating some health problems.

Yellow sand from China makes everything yellow, the sky or your just washed car…

There are two problems with wearing a mask though, since most of them are white surgical masks and are therefore not so nice to look at. The other reason why yours truly never wears a mask is due the fact that you have to inhale your own breath, and after a night of heavy drinking and some garlic fried rice you can imagine how pleasantly my nose reacts to this…

No longer shall thy suffer from bad fashion or bad breath!

The company “Gonoturn”  has what must be the best looking masks available, they create their own original designed masks and collaborate to create animation, manga, fashion brands and even  pro wrestling !

Gonoturn tells international customers to use Tenso forwarding services, but we have no worries competing with them due to the following reasons:

1-we can match or even go below their shipping prices.

2-we mark our packages as “present” or “used” (which they technically are) to avoid or lower tax.

3-If a shop refunds broken or wrongly described product, we will deal with them, when you use Tenso or another forwarding company you’ll lose all control. If you are not happy, we are not happy and we will file a complaint.

4-No signing up and no newsletter.

5-We answer any questions you have concerning the product.

6-No problems paying, you pay us, no need to fill out anything written in Japanese.

7-We will  look for cheaper options for the same product and reviews.

So what are you waiting for, winter is approaching fast, Christmas is approaching fast, your own/girlfriend/friend/sister/brother/boyfriend/wife/husband/mother/father’s birthday is approaching fast, colo(u)r those dark winter days a little brighter with these products and create a smile on people’s faces..you’re be smiling too, but your smile is hidden under a warm mask…

Kawaii yakata takes cuteness to a new level…

Nobody does cute like the Japanese, it’s like their yin to their yang….Japan kinda invented monsters and other  straight out of nightmares things like “yokai” which are otherworldly or inexplicable beings and the “kaiju” or strange beast. Believe in ghosts (obake) and spirits (Yūrei) is very strong, sure not everybody will openly admit this, but few eyebrows are raised if a person tells that he or she witnessed a ghost.

They even captured a ghost on BBC world service..actually this is a Yamamba, a trend which used to be big in Harajuku….

But for every Oni(devil) there’s a Kitty, for every kappa a  my melody…And we are not only taking about fictional monsters…. for every bully there’s a Doraemon and for every prime minister there’s Mickey Mouse. So a country which creates and houses the world’s most horrible creatures, also creates the biggest amount of cute creatures(dolls and people included)..if that’s not yin and yang then what is?

Japan loves kawaii and kawaii is big business, kawaii girls join kawaii girl’s bands and play in sold out theaters, Disney Land is the most popular place to visit for Japanese, USJ (Universal Studio Japan) would never have survived if they didn’ have  Snoopy, all the characters of Sesame Street and Sanrio’s Kitty. Cities and prefectures spend lots of (tax)money to create a cute mascot for promotion and hopefully increased tourism and trade..with mixed results. Make up companies are doing business selling mascara to make your eyes look bigger, giving you that manga kawaii look. The list goes on and on

And don’t forget to purchase these coasters, you don’t want to get stains on your new table now don’t you?
