The Spline board,a succesfull crossbred of a skateboard and a J-Board.

What do you get when you cross a J-board with a skateboard…….. A spline board! A spline or better said, a flat spline, is a device to draw curves, it’s modern term is “flexible curve” and from the name you might get an idea of what the spline board excels at….cornering and curving.

The original J-board(caster board) is quite a nifty device, through balancing and moving your lower body you create speed, even up hill.  My sons who are pretty good skateboarders got theirs a few years back and initially they left their skateboards behind , enjoying the relative ease of moving around on a J-board…but that enthusiasm has settled a bit in the last few years and they returned doing ollies and riding the ramps on their  Powell boards. Sure they could do an ollie on their J boards, but it was all less natural, the hard plastic just didn’t flex or flexed too much in the wrong places. Nothing beats a wooden board when riding the ramps and performing tricks. The hard plastic cheap ass  tires didn’t help to improve that experience.

The J board EX

DUB STACK a Japanese maker of skateboards cross bred one of their skateboards with a J board and unlike cross bred dogs which only get improved looks, but lose their natural born qualities, this baby turned out to be a revelation! A healthy baby was born and listened to the name Spline Skateboard™ DSB-13

They used a serious deck made out of 7ply Canadian Maple, cut it in half and connected those parts with a UHMW (ultra high molecular weight polyethylene) /glass fiber flexible center part.

Spline skateboard DSB-13 deck specification
The center console makes for easy carrying

Than they used 76mm wheels with a 85A hardness for smooth running in and out- doors.

Spline skateboard DSB-13 Wheel Spec

For the trucks they used Aluminum A356 with a PU cushion. These wheels have 360 degree rotation, and this in combination with the PU shock absorption makes you able to do tricks not possible on a J or skate board.

Spline skateboard DSB-13 track spec

The bearings used are ABEC-7(same like those on the stereo vinyl cruiser), these are smooth and strong and can withstand abuse on the rough city streets or on the ramps.

The dimensions

Now check out this video to see this board in action.

The only downfall I noticed, is that the advised maximum weight of the rider is  65 kg, but I’ve been riding it with my 75 kg(too much ramen) and didn’t experience any problems with shocks or smoothness of the ride…

So my boys are happy campers and they steal the show at the skating ramps…making me a proud dad!

The price is around 11,000 yen which makes it cheaper than a fully loaded skate board and just a tad more expensive than a J board.

Our piece on the tabi sneakers generated an enthusiastic response from all over the world(not kidding, from Russia to Brazil and so on), so we decided to follow up on this article with a new list of these comfy sneakers from several other brands.

Kiss+Ukiyo-E project=total awesomeness

“The true beauty and purpose of this traditional art form is brought back to life, as a new Ukiyo-e piece by skilled craftsmen (Illustrator • Wood Carver • Hand Printer) who have passed down the original techniques to subsequent generations for over 400 years.”

syozuri
Creating these wood prints is an 8 month process

True Japan lovers and art lovers don’t have to be informed in the beauty and skill of Ukiyo-e, the 400 year old Japanese Traditional Woodblock Print art.

This time they partnered up with U.S.-based Epic Rights, the global brand management firm for KISS to create the best looking Ukiyo-e yet…KISS has some kind of Kabuki presence due to their make up and facial expressions (think long tongue), which makes them the perfect models.

They have created 3 unique pieces for the “international” market (which in this case means the USA and Japan) , with two pieces coming in “autographed”(by the band) and not “autographed”.

1-The artwork shows a battle scene of MOMOIRO CLOVER Z (MCZ) in vibrant, bright and colorful armor, versus KISS as the black flame, fireball monster.

MCZvsKISS(small)
MOMOIRO CLOVER Z vs. KISS Ukiyo-e  $1,250.00

2-KISS Kabuki Ukiyo-e. This portrait style is very popular in the Ukiyo-e art. The design of the Kimono comes from Aoko Roshi(47 Ronin), a touch of shine is infused with mica on the Kimono (grey area) in respect to KISS. The color inside Hauberk expresses each member of the band.
The lighter color make-up symbolizes Kabuki’s Kumadori make-up.

$1,250.00 or  $2,500.00 for the autographed piece

3-KISS Monstrous Ukiyo-e. The members of the band are transformed into monsters and samurai. Gene Simmons is the flying devil with the big head. Eric Singer is the ‘Nekomata (mythical two-tailed monster)’, which stands for cat monster just like his character in the band. Tommy Thayer is the ‘Nuribotoke’ a monster with the Buddha face. Paul Stanley is the warrior who fights these creatures and the front piece of the warrior’s helmet has a star shape from his persona name ‘Star Child’.
Pentagram is his signature but hexagram on his armor above his knees are meant to protect from the evil.

$1,250.00 or  $2,500.00 for the autographed piece

This Washi making in Fukui has a history of 1500 years. Washi was used for preserving documents in the age of the samurai. Made of all natural fibers from the mulberry tree, which allows the Washi to be very durable. Ukiyo-e would not have its form unless the Artisans had this Washi paper. Kendama for beginners and pro’s

If you’ve been waiting, now is the perfect time to take up the traditional children’s game!

As the game grows in popularity overseas, kendama is also getting a bit of extra attention in Japan, it looks like the game might be developing some real mainstream appeal. And with Sanrio now releasing some ultra-cute kendama sets, we’re pretty sure it’s popularity will only grow more!

Check out these vids from the duo Zoomadanke with zoomastyle!

▼ Because who wouldn’t want to play with this in public?

N-1512-023337_2

Kendama has been around for generations, so there’s no questioning its staying power, but we also think it’s fair to say the game isn’t quite as popular as, say, Candy Crush these days. But a Hello Kitty version of kendama seems like the perfect way to get some new people to play the game. And the toys, produced by Sanrio and available on their online store for 2,268 yen (about US$20), even bear the Japan Kendama Association’s specially recommended product mark, so if you’re looking to get started, this is, officially, one of the best you can buy!

There are six to choose from, all featuring some of Sanrio’s most popular characters. Of course, the first, and our favorite, is Hello Kitty!

▼ Though we’d feel kind of bad swinging her around like that…

N-1512-023337_4

There are also two versions of everyone’s favorite lazy egg, Gudetama! First is the normal version, which has the character sitting in half an egg shell, looking as if it just settled into a nice hot bath.

N-1512-023400_4

And then we have a golden version of Gudetama.

▼ Though he looks no less lazy…

N-1512-023477_4

And for a old-school, child-friendly version, we also have one of the cutest frogs in Japan, Kero Kero Keroppi!

N-1512-023451_4

There’s also a Pom Pom Purin kendama toy in case your favorite animal is the adorably illustrated dog.

N-1512-023442_4

And, finally, there’s a My Melody version. Interestingly enough, it’s not listed on Sanrio’s website — but you can find it on Amazon Japan.

If you want to take a notch higher than it’s a good idea to check out the following kendama tokohoku

This site is set up by Beams and Yahoo Japan Corporation Reconstruction Assistance, primarily for kendama enthusiasts, and for the build up of Tohoku where the awful earthquake and tsunami struck. Part of the sales will be donated to organizations engaged in reconstruction in Tohoku. So you get the best of the best, because each product is created in collaboration with professional kendama players, and you get to do a good deed!

Artful craftsmen create men’s kimono using unconventional materials, with astounding results.

Kyoto-based fashion label Wazigen Shizukuya is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a new line named opus 9, giving us   some new unorthodox kimono, leaving the traditional silk behind and using paper (!?) instead…..

Egyptian-mummy-246x402

Wrong image my friend, although I had the same image when I read the headline of their press release, but upon further reading things became clear..the paper they used is called kamico, which is paper treated with starch and rubbed and wrinkled until it is soft and flexible, this started as early as in the 14th century, which is  a really  long time ago. The first folks who wore clothes made out of this material were Buddhist priests who used it as robes and underwear, than later by the poor(ish) people as clothes and bedding because it was cheap….well due to  inflation and some other things  it has become a rather pricey product in our time and age. Nowadays kamico is still created the same way but the paper is sewn with hemp yarn and cotton yarn for extra strength.

Kamico (calling it paper would be the same as calling carbon fiber, plastic)has the advantages that it insulates and that it’s very light, which translates to highly comfy in modern English, actually a lot of kabuki costumes are made out of this material

A great disadvantage though is that these clothes aren’t washable which would upset your wife or mother, but they can withstand the rain, (not typhoons)  and if due to a case of extreme clumsiness you tear it, you can repair it with kamico!

Okay enough bla bla let’s have a look, first up is the:

Sukapara × FLiPLiPS × Nano Universe, collaboration T-shirt Limited release.

Wow that must be the longest title ever, and yeah although I agree that it’s a mouthful, I couldn’t shorten it anymore even if I tried…

Select fashion shop Nano Universe and radio station FLiPLiPS (coolest name ever) announced the sale of a T-shirt created for the upcoming of Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra’s(Sukapara in short) concert in Kyoto on April the 15th and the 16th.

As the band’s name suggests, this is a ska band and not your average J-pop group, these boys have the musical skills to back up their game, they are not just a bunch of good looking,  fabricated by some clever agency short termers.  They have performed at concerts all around the globe and they have established themselves as a true ska band.

Back to the T-shirt..the shirt is designed by Moriya Tsutomu, designer of Ila and art director of several musical acts in Japan.

The design of the shirt is inspired by the petals of cherry blossom which are blown from the trees by strong May winds or hanafubuki as the Japanese call it(flower-storm),  which is a strong part of the love the Japanese have for these lovely pink blossomed trees. Its fleeting beauty is  as a metaphor for life itself. The Japanese take their hanami or blossom viewing season very serious and although lots of foreigners see the usual hanami parties as just an excuse to drink and be jolly, for Japanese it’s so much more…. kinda like a tulip to a cloggy.

Falling petals for the Japanese and a tulip(glass)for the Dutch

In the center of the shirt you can see Kyoto tower and as an act of selfless promotion, Kyoto Tower has announced that 100 wearers of this T-shirt will get free admission to this tower and you’ll receive a sticker in the same design as the shirt! So if you  want to visit Kyoto this year during its most beautiful season then ordering this shirt would be a no-brainer.

Sukapara × FLiPLiPS × Nano Universe collaboration T-shirt

This shirt is now up for pre-ordering and will be delivered in April, maybe just in time to wear to the concert and cost ¥ 3,800.

While you’re at it why don’t you ask us to send you some cheap Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra cd’s, we can get you used ones for the cheapest of the cheapest and we can even upload these cd’s for you on a private cloud account so you can listen while the cd is on its way to you….life has never been more convenient.

JWS japanwebshopping website renewal.

Let me first thank you all dear customers/friends who have been putting your trust in our service, without your help we’d all be working for other companies and we wouldn’t enjoy our jobs/lives as much as we do now.

We’ve been  getting the most surprising and unusual requests and thereby expanding our horizon in what you want and we learn what makes our fellow human being tick. Communicating with folks from all around the world has been a challenging at times (we had to bring in a part-time Spanish speaker/translator  and on a rare occasion a Russian translator), but besides  these rare hiccups, chatting with you through Skype/WordPress/mail and Facebook has been a blast.

We also value your input a lot, and a common complain was that our website loaded like snail…our mistake was that we tried to put as much information and connecting links in it as possible, thereby creating a headache for those without high speed internet access.

So we went a bit simpler this time, and changed the look to a more material/metal look. The pages load a bit faster and it’s definitely easier to the eye. Our love for manga and anime are also more present this time around.

This dark metallic look continues in the separate product pages.

We still haven’t completed the whole site yet though(especially the Japanese section), but we’re working hard to have it finished before Christmas.

Thank you all so much for your patience and in the meantime we will continue to be the best/safest/cheapest (and most personal) personal shopper for you.
