Limited run of commemorative Ed Sheeran sake on sale from 8 April

The perfect collaboration for Ed’s fans and alcoholics, or is it for alcoholic Ed Sheeran fans? Nah Put up a record of him and sip slowly from a tiny cup of this delicious sake…it’s paradise!

Although it’s sure to make one scratch their head at first, it actually makes a lot of sense when you think about it. Sheeran frequently mentions his tendency to tie one on with friends, and the sake industry is constantly trying to reach out to a more diverse crowd, namely younger people and women.

So, as Sheeran’s unique blend of folk-soul-pop returns to Japan on the Divide World Tour 2019, Konshi Brewing in Hyogo Prefecture decided the time was right to release Ed Sheeran Sake.

First, there’s the Ed Sheeran Junmai Ginjo sake which is a finely-produced beverage using only the purest ingredients, resulting in a mellow yet slightly crisp flavor with a tangy aromatic tinge, not unlike the hit “You Need Me, I Don’t Need You.” Speaking of which, the bottle is colored with the same orange as Sheeran’s breakout album +.

▼ Here’s an image of the album, pronounced “plus.”

▼ And here is the color-matching sake.

However, this is a standard sake, and as such has a relatively high alcohol content at around 15 percent. If you’d like something lighter and bubblier along the lines of “Shape of You,” then you may want to try a bottle of Ed Sheeran Sparkling Sake.

With only a 10 percent ABV, this carbonated sake comes in a blue labeled bottle using the same shades as his ÷ album (pronounced “divide”). Both bottles are also decorated with drawings of little cat paws that Konshi says belong to Sheeran’s own pet feline.

Each type is limited to 3,000 bottles and go on sale at AEON shopping centers across Japan from 8 April. They’re slightly on the pricey side at 2,000 yen (US$18) for a 720-milliliter (24-ounce) bottle, but it’s still low enough to take the plunge and pick one up. I mean, how often does a chance to score some Ed Sheeran sake come along?

Our excuses for the few posts recently, but we have been very busy with several ventures, our most recent venture as media fixer for foreign media crews has let us without any time to update our blog. Of course we haven’t left our customers in the wind, all ordered products have been successfully purchased and shipped. Thank you for your loyalty and trust.

New dress code for waitresses!

Three different styles, multiple, materials, and five different colors let you customize your look for cleaning your techno-dwelling.

Just before the start of summer, Japanese fashion label M Kikaku released its line of fairy tale heroine swimsuits, featuring nods to the stories of Snow White, Alice in Wonderland, and Little Red riding Hood. But with September winding down, it’s now too cold to hit the beach, and so M Kikaku is back again with another line of cute and sexy fashions.

The Cyber Maid outfit combines the 19th century style cues of the classic maid uniform with modern, techno-inspired lines and materials. The result is something that looks at once both traditional and futuristic.

To make the ensemble look even more cutting-edge, you have your choice of three different materials: satin, metallic material, or glossy enamel leather, which M Kikaku respectively describes as the “elegant,” “cyber,” and “fetish” options.

▼ Left to right: satin, enamel, metallic

There are also three styles of skirt to select from. Pictured above it the billowy round skirt, but if you’d prefer something more form-fitting, there’s the tight miniskirt is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

And if you’re looking for more leg coverage, there’s also the tight long skirt.

But even those aren’t all the customization opportunities. If the standard black-and-white color scheme is a little too stereotypical for your tastes, the round skirt version is also available in red, blue, gold, and silver.

▼ The long skirt can also be had in blue, gold, and silver, while the mini skirt is available exclusively in black.

Even though M Kikaku designates the different Cyber Maid uniforms by their “skirt” type, they’re actually dresses, and can be worn without the connected collar/sleeves the models are seen posing in.

The dress and sleeves are bundled together for a price of 25,950 yen (US$234), while the dresses alone can be purchased for 13,950 yen.  Delivery scheduled for late November.

Walk like a robot cat from the future with Doraemon Reebok shoes

To the casual observer, Doraemon must appear to be the patron saint of Japan; his image can be found everywhere. Doraemon’s face or colour scheme crops up on goods ranging from McDonald’s toys to PC cushions to face masks.

For those unfamiliar with His Works, Doraemon is a robot cat sent back from the future to help schoolboy Nobita navigate the trials and travails of everyday life by producing a series of amazing devices.

While we may have to wait a little longer for a genuine “anywhere door” or “memory bread,” we can now walk, run, and exercise in style with these new Doraemon Reebok trainers, which certainly catch the eye.

Coinciding with the Japanese release of the latest Doraemon movie, Doraemon’s Great Adventure to the South Pole on the March 4, these funky trainers are a collaboration between Reebok Instapump Fury and design company atmos and also go on sale on the same day.

But, fashionistas may ask, what could possibly go with garishly light-blue shoes?

The answer may be yet more Doraemon-themed blueness. Perhaps in the form of this Kway jacket. It does however look a little bit thin for Antarctic adventuring, so that’s probably best left to those with amenable robotic felines.

▼ The shoes proclaim the wearer’s love of Dorayaki, Doraemon’s favourite snack.
Whether this will result in being handed the delicious snacks is unclear.

▼ The pump resembles Doraemon’s signature bell.

rsz_bs7368-7

▼ Even the inner soles feature Doraemon.

The shoes are available from the Reebok Harajuku store or the atmos website and retail at 21,600 yen (US$190), including tax. While at time of writing the atmos website only had sizes up to 24.5 (US size 6.5) there is the option to request sizes up to 30 centimetres (US size 12).

The Kway jacket is also available from the atmos website for 13,824 yen. Perfect for that well-known Doraemon and Crossfit-fan niche.

J-Scent, perfumes that capture the aromas of Japan

Ah, perfume! What a vast array of scents that word includes. From standard florals and musks to more outlandish aromas like tanuki raccoon dog or Attack on Titan characters, there’s a dizzying selection to choose from. Or perhaps it’s just spending too long in the perfume section that’s making you light-headed.

If your lady love is a Japan fan, you can bypass all those testers and head straight for the J-Scent Collection: a series of perfumes that evoke uniquely Japanese aromas. They’ve just released their first three scents, Agarwood, Roasted Green Tea and Wasanbon.

Now, agarwood is a resinous heartwood produced when lign-aloe trees are infected with a particular type of mold. It’s a rare and expensive ingredient that it is commonly used in fine perfumes. It’s also used in traditional Japanese incense, so it’s not surprising to find it in this line.

▼ Agarwood: so you too can smell like moldy wood

agarwood

Roasted Green Tea and Wasanbon, on the other hand, are not your typical perfume scents.

Roasted Green Tea, or hojicha, in Japanese, is a very popular beverage and is served both hot and cold. It has a warming, earthy scent, especially as the leaves are being roasted. According to the manufacturer, this perfume recalls that and “the feeling of having a chat with an intimate friend.”

Wasanbon is an expensive fine-grained sugar produced in the south of Japan from sugarcane. It is primarily used in making wagashi, or traditional Japanese sweets. I can’t say that there is any particular smell associated with it, but the product description says it’s “a friendly scent with the image of delicate wagashi.”

201304-1-1.jpg

They all sound like nice subtle scents that could make for a thoughtful Valentine’s day gift, though you might want to be careful they get you fired up for the wrong activity.

▼ “Mmm, baby, your perfume makes me want to eat a bunch of sugar and have a cup of tea.”

Japan’s new Nurse Maid Dress combines two playfully iconic looks in one charming outfit

Can’t choose between the two popular motifs? Now you don’t have to.

Japanese fashion label Sukiyaki often pays homage to a specific anime franchise. In the past we’ve seen the brand release dresses based on Cardcaptor Sakura and virtual idol Hatsune Miku.

But Sukiyaki doesn’t need a specific anime tie-in to show off its playful creative talents. This time, it’s taken two of Japan’s most popular costume motifs, the maid outfit and the nurse’s uniform, and combined them into the Nurse Maid Dress.

mn-1

Making liberal use of frills and crosses, the complete regalia consists of a dress, cap, apron, and ribbon. Mixing and matching the pieces allows you to get quite a bit of variety from the set (which is machine-washable).

mn-2

mn-3

The snap-button design helps keep everything neat and tidy, and also provides a visual slimming effect for the wearer’s silhouette.

▼ Sukiyaki is in no way shy about touting the outfit’s anime-style aesthetics.

mn-4

mn-5

Sukiyaki is billing this as the first entry in its new Fantasy Maid line, although so far the company is mum on what other motifs will be added, or when. For now, though, the Nurse Maid Dress can be ordered priced at 13,824 yen (US$134).

The most comfortable pajama…ever!

Those who’ve been following our blog or have been visiting our website know of our love/double love relation with Bibi Lab and its refreshing original and useful products. We actually survived this summer unbitten by those pesky tiger mosquitoes thanks to the  Net man, a full body mosquito net

Earlier this year offbeat clothing and housewares company Bibi Lab released its Damegi roomwear. A one-piece garment for relaxing at home, the Damegi gets its name from dame (“no good”) and gi (“clothing”) because of the implied promise that it’s so comfortable it’ll absolutely kill any sort of productivity while you’re wearing it.

While the previous model was marketed to women, a brand-new version of the Damegi, called the Fuyu no Damegi (“Winter Damegi”), has just gone on sale, sporting a number of improvements over the original design. For starters, instead of the drab gray of the original, you can now chose between five different colors: Pinky Peach, Chocolate Mellow (brown), Green Rush, High Risk Red, and Midnight Navy. The medium size fits wearers up to 165 centimeters (65 inches) in height, while the large is for those up to 180 centimeters.

dg-2

Made of extra warm, heat-retentive material, the new Damegi will keep you toasty not just from head to toe, but to your fingertips too, thanks to its four-way convertible mitten-style sleeve cuffs.

dg-3

dg-4

A hood and zip-up mask will also help keep heat from dissipating out of your head.

dg-5

dg-6

Down at the end of the pant legs, you’ll find snap-shut coverings for slipper-like comfort.

dg-7

And, as is standard with the Damegi, the hood contains two openings to pass twintails through.

dg-8

dg-9

And, for a last bit of functionality, the Fuyu no Damegi has a zip-out section at the rear, so you can go to the bathroom without having to take the entire thing off.

dg-10

Bibi Lab says the Fuyu no Damegi is great for happy families and loving couples alike.

dg-11

dg-12

The company also bills it as the perfect “gaming wear” for cold-weather video game binges.

dg-13

▼ Pop in a game with a setting on a tropical beach, and kiss winter good-bye.

dg-14

And being the holistic-minded company it is, Bibi Lab also recommends enjoying the Fuyu no Damegi in tandem with some of its other products, such as the Cotton Wife/Husband or Sandwiched Between Twintails Pillow.

dg-15

dg-16

With prices starting as low as 5,709 ten (US$55) there is nothing to hold you back to get as comfy as possible this winter…Don’t blame us, though, if after you put it on you end up spending all winter loafing on the couch.

Reebok teams up with Chocomoo to create future noise.

The title might have you left scratching your head, but no worries I left the capital letters of Future and Noise out on purpose to get your attention, cheeky eh? Future Noise is the theme of this collaboration and not some preserved noise to be opened in the future (well some folks would say that a wrapped CD would fulfill that description too, but that’s so imaginationless).

Chokomoon Yuka is a gifted Harajuku illustrator who has lend her pop art illustrations to several projects and products like Dr.Martens, the pop group Exile, Newneu skateboard products, Disney etc etc.

Disney and Tatto stockings

This time she teamed up with sports apparel maker Reebok to create five distinctive pieces.

When you say Reebok, you say Instapump, the super light and oh so comfy kicks. The model used by Chocomoo is the Fury CM.

First fake food hairwear, now footwear!

Passers-by will be salivating over your delicious-looking footwear.

One of the most enticing things about eating out in Japan is the chance to gaze upon stunning food replicas in restaurant display windows, which show exactly what they have on offer, in beautifully recreated plastic form. The food samples are so popular that small versions can be purchased at specialty shops as souvenirs, but for those who want to add some delicacies to their wardrobe, Japanese retailer Fake Food Hatanaka is the place to go.

▼ Fancy a décolletage dripping with delectable citrus? This store has you covered.

9

Fake Food Hatanaka first wowed us back in 2013 with their head-turning range of jewellery and headbands, which caused a sensation online again this year with some more snazzy updates. While a browse through their collection turns up some curious products, some of their showstoppers can be found in the company’s footwear department, with two pairs of boots that look so refreshingly delicious we don’t know whether we want to wear them or bite into them!

2

The “Orange Cake Short Boots” retail for 10,800 yen (US$104), which is not a bad price, considering that most of the restaurant-style food replicas retail for 10,000 yen each.

8

The juicy-looking sliced oranges have been carefully arranged around each boot to enhance the realism and give them an aesthetically pleasing finish.

7

▼ The long Orange Cake Boots retail for 28,000 yen.

o1

This design features an extra serving of delicious orange slices, with the base colour resembling a warm, cooked cake surface.

6

▼ It’s the perfect way to brighten up a dreary, rainy day!

5

Although with fruit as realistic as this, you might want to keep some oranges nearby to stop yourself from licking your boots!

3

If you want to add some zest to your shoe collection, head over to the Fake Food Hatanaka store, where the boots can be ordered online for shipping around the world. While you’re there, you might want to check out all their other amazing products, like drinks, sweets, and sandwiches too!

The best rivalries in manga as chosen by Japanese voters – Top 10 list

We got a lot of mail from folks telling me that they like this blog more for its info on manga and anime than topics like underwear and Ultraman….   If we weren’t a small business than all I’d like to do is writing about manga and anime…however..time and a noisy boss often forces me to choose the commercial road. But..I’m hearing you, my fellow otakus. Unfortunately  with little time on my hands I have to resort to the web and less on my own investigative skills…but if if I find a nice story deeming worth your interest than I’ll swallow my pride and share that piece of information….

They might be bad guys, but they’re not baaad guys.

Rivals: you love to hate them and hate to love them. The relationship between two opposing characters can really raise the emotion and heart in stories. You feel not only for the protagonist, but also for the antagonist because they’re both just trying to accomplish their own goals, albeit in a different fashion. Sometimes your rival is a complete jerk, but that’s because they’re hiding all their pain. Other times your rival helps you because you push each other to be the best that you can be. Here are the Top 10 rivalries as chosen by Japanese pollsters. (Beware! Slight spoilers ahead!)

10. Jimmy Kudo vs. Harley Hartwell (Case Closed)

The first pair on the list are dueling detectives that rely on each other to push their analytical skills to the extreme. Two of the four great young detectives, Jimmy and Harley often find themselves investigating gruesome mysteries with unbelievable outcomes.

9. Kenshin Himura vs. Hajime Saito (Rurouni Kenshin)

While Kenshin was haunted by his past, Hajime reveled in it. Their rivalry began before the series officially started when Kenshin was the “manslayer” and Hajime was a member of the Shinsengumi. During the series, their epic battles almost forces Kenshin to become a killer again, but he never crosses that line.

8. Kenshiro vs. Raoh (Fist of the North Star)

This mighty rivalry began when Kenshiro was chosen as the successor to the Hokuto Shinken and Raoh broke 1,800 years of tradition and refused to give up his power. Killing their master, Ryuken, made sure that Kenshiro would fight with a vengeance when the truth was eventually revealed.

7. Naruto Uzumaki vs. Sasuke Uchiha (Naruto)

Naruto and Sasuke each had what the other unknowingly wanted resulting in an intense rivalry that drove most of the story. Their battles also led to an extremely powerful friendship.

6. Light Yagami vs. L (Death Note)

Light and L played so many mind games that it was hard to figure out who to cheer for, but their match of wits will forever be remembered by Death Note fans.

5. Jimmy Kudo vs. Phantom Thief Kid (Case Closed)

One’s a thief, and the other is a detective, so naturally they are at odds. However, no matter how much the Phantom Thief steals, you can’t help cheer for him as he constantly outwits the police, but rarely Kudo.

4. Amuro Ray vs. Char Aznable (Mobile Suit Gundam)

What begins simply as warrior pride turns into a back and forth that tries to answer the question of the meaning of war and violence. These two mech pilots do their best to give their answer on the battlefield.

3. Hanamichi Sakuragi vs. Kaede Rukawa (Slam Dunk)

Even though these two play for the same team, their rivalry is at the forefront of Slam Dunk. One is motivated to be better than the other, and one barely gives him the time of day. But without their passionate rivalry, their basketball, and the series, wouldn’t grow.

2. Goku vs. Vegeta (Dragon Ball Z)

The Prince of All Saiyans may have once tried to kill Goku and his friends, but since that time, they’ve had a spectacular rivalry that has kept Earth safe and ensured that the two of them were the strongest beings in the universe.

1. Lupin the Third vs. Koichi Zenigata (Lupin the Third)

The infamous thief needs a detective to chase after him. Much like Kudo and the Phantom Thief, Detective Zenigata spends most of his time trying to catch Lupin the Third. But as slippery as Lupin is, we highly doubt Zenigata will ever really be able to establish himself as Lupin’s equal.

Is your number one rivalry on the list? The original Japanese poll counted submissions in order to create a list of the Top 50 best rivalries. So if your favorite isn’t here, chances are it probably appears somewhere lower down. If you are interested, definitely check out the full list to see where your raging rivalry ranks.
