This Mother’s Day, give Mom some panties

When you were a kid, your mom bought your underwear for you, but are you comfortable returning the favor?

Japan celebrates Mother’s Day on the same day as the U.S. does, which this year will be May 14. With just a few weeks left between now and then, loving children are thinking about what to get mom as a present, and one company has a very…unusual suggestion.

While carnations are associated with Mother’s Day in other countries as well, the connection is iron-clad in Japan. So for those who haven’t gotten a gift for Mom yet, Kyoto-based Wacoal suggests these.

Elegantly and individually wrapped, what mother wouldn’t be deeply touched to receive these from her son or daughter? Actually, that’s not a rhetorical question, and the answer is “Any mom who doesn’t want her kids buying panties for her.”

See, Wacoal isn’t a florist. It’s a lingerie maker (the same one that recently polled women about their “showdown lingerie”). So while those may look like carnations, they’re actually carefully rolled, folded, and packaged panties.

Officially called the “Pants Flower” series, some solace can be taken in that Wacoal chose a decidedly conservative, non-sexy design for the lineup. If you absolutely feel the need to give your mom some intimate apparel as a present, well, this is probably the most appropriate style to go with.

▼ Although things are going to get awkward if she stops to read the packaging, which has “UNDERWEAR is LOVELETTER” written across it.

Aside from folding the panties to resemble carnations, the fabric is actually colored with dye extracted from the traditional Mother’s Day flowers, adding just a tiny bit of logic to this rather unorthodox gift idea.

The Pants Flowers series is priced at 1,296 yen (US$11.70) a pair, meaning that even if you baffle your mom with your present selection, you at least might be able to impress her with your frugality. All three colors can be ordered here directly from Wacoal, in medium or large sizes (apparently the company is confident your mom isn’t svelte enough for a small).

Puella Magi Madoka Magica anime lingerie line expands with new Sayaka and Kyoko sets

Second batch of themed intimate apparel rounds off representation of the hit series’ core cast.

Anime TV series Puella Magi Madoka Magica ends on a bit of an ambiguously bittersweet note. The core conflict of the dark magical girl story is only partially resolved, but thanks to the efforts of its heroines, there’s at least a ray of hope for the future.

That description actually parallels what’s happening with the Madoka Magica lingerie line, Earlier this spring, anime fashion company Super Groupies unveiled bra and pantie sets inspired by character’s Madoka, Homura, and Mami, but as of April 17, they’re no longer available. Still, that doesn’t mean you’re completely out of options, and now it’s time for the final two members of the central cast, Sayaka and Kyoko, to get lingerie sets of their own.

Aside from being in the image colors of their respective characters, the designs feature subtle nods to the series for the enjoyment of sharp-eyed fans. The Sayaka set’s bra features a dangling charm in the shape of the fortissimo musical annotation, which matches the barrette she wears throughout the anime.

▼ The panties, meanwhile, feature an asymmetrical lace accent.

The Kyoko set bra lacks a charm, but instead has a black ribbon at its center reminiscent of the one the character uses to tie her hair up into its customary ponytail.

▼ The panties are also a bit more orthodox than unbalanced Sayaka’s.

Both sets are identically priced at 8,800 yen (US$82) and can be purchased directly from Super Groupies (Sayaka here, Kyoko here) with delivery scheduled for mid-October. Oh, and if you’re ordering, don’t forget your Madoka Magica swimsuit, too.

Madoka Magica heads to the beach with new line of anime-themed swimsuits

If you’re a magical girl, or just an anime fan, in need of some seaside R and R, this unique swimwear is for you.

On the surface, the hit anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica looks like a simple tale of good versus evil, but the surprisingly subversive series raises a number of difficult questions. “How different, really, is a seemingly heroic magical girl from a self-indulgent witch?” it asks. “Where do you draw the line between blind devotion and all-consuming desire?”

And now, Madoka Magica is presenting another blurred line, with a new line of swimsuits that look, at first glance, like casual roomwear.

▼ The swimsuits, pictured here, are a stark departure from the Madoka Magica lingerie sets, which look exactly like you’d expect underwear to.

Anime fashion brand Super Groupies has partnered with the designers at MIIA to produce the bathing suits, and while the core cast of Madoka Magica consists of five magical girls, right now it’s only the two biggest stars who are represented, with one set for protagonist Madoka Kaname and the other for Homura Akemi.

MM 4

Super Groupies itself readily admits that the designs don’t immediately scream “swimwear,” but that’s completely deliberate. The company says that the non-revealing style makes the Madoka Magica swimsuits a great choice for people headed to beachside events or pool parties who want the option of going for a dip yet still having the coverage they desire for the lengthy amount of time they’ll be spending out of the water, too.

Both models feature the same cut and overall design, with a pattern featuring the magical girls’ soul gems and other shapes in a faux constellation motif. The three-piece sets include a top, shorts, and bikini bottom, all made of swimsuit material.

While the Madoka Magica franchise loves to submerge itself in gray-area issues of morality, the swimsuits are much more colorful. Madoka’s is pink from top to bottom, while Homura’s two-shade design reflects the duality of the character’s emotional state and motivations.

▼ Or maybe navy and lavender just go well together.

Both suits are priced at 15,000 yen (US$140), and include the illustrations seen here of their individual character wearing the outfit. Delivery is scheduled for early August.

Lingerie for girls with smaller breasts: feast’s new collection “Glossy Ribbon Mermaid” is too cute

Celebrating its first anniversary, feast, the lingerie brand designed by Gomi Hayakawa and known for targeting women with smaller chest sizes, has released a new lingerie collection, called “Glossy Ribbon Mermaid”.

Since it can be difficult for girls who have smaller breasts to find cute and pretty lingerie, Gomi Hayakawa’s designs have been warmly welcomed by girls in Japan. The new line has a cute yet luxurious look, featuring ribbons and mermaid inspired designs.

Lingerie retailer catering to flat-chested girls inundated with orders within hours of opening

“Why should only big-breasted girls get all the fun of lingerie shopping?” is apparently the question that led Japanese fashion school student Gomi Hayakawa to design and sell these stylish lingerie sets, tailor-made for flat chested girls, under the brand name of “Feast.”

Now, I understand that, in English, “flat-chested” has mildly derogatory connotations (imagine how a guy would react if you described him as having “micro junk” or something), but trust me, in this case I’m literally just directly translating. Japanese has so many words for varying sizes, textures and shapes of breasts your head will spin.

When one is able to describe breasts in one word with the same amount of detail a sommelier might describe the varying flavor notes of a particularly complex wine, well then, it’s no wonder Japan has a bit of a breast-loving reputation.

Anyway, it turns out Hayakawa’s designs are answering a serious market need, as small-chested ladies from Japan over hustled to the home page to place their orders, totally overwhelming Hayakawa and her small staff within hours of the shop going online.

Hayakawa, a mere Freshman at her fashion school, no doubt expected her lingerie sets to hold little more than niche appeal, as she has announced she’ll be running out of supplies after one more round of orders. But, Japan being a capitalist nation, we can imagine she’ll find some way to boost supply if demand keeps rolling in.

It’s nice that, here in boob-obsessed Japan, the (not as plentiful as you think) small-busted ladies now have a tailor-made product to help them feel sexy in their nightwear too. Just remember to be careful about who you wear it around, girls.

Hayakawa doesn’t  accommodate shipping to foreign countries, but we do, so if you want to get your hands on the whimsically-named “Fairy Feather” or “Angelic Wing” sets, you can check if they’re still available here.
